DETROIT (WWJ) – A Macomb County man has been arrested in connection with one of two mass shootings in Detroit on Saturday that left three people dead and nine others injured.
The man, whose name, age and hometown have not been disclosed, was arrested in connection with a shooting in the area of Saratoga and Gratiot on the city’s northwest side.
Authorities say officers were called to a vacant home known to be a drug house in that area around 10:45 a.m. Saturday and found five people who had been shot.
A man was pronounced dead at the scene, while four other victims were taken to the hospital. Officials said Monday afternoon one victim was in critical condition, while the others were expected to make a full recovery. Officials have not released any information about the victims.
Investigators have recovered the gun they believe was used in the shooting, though it was not clear what type of gun was used. Exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
Officials have not given any word on what charges the Macomb County man may be facing.
About 12 hours later, Detroit police were called to the scene of another mass shooting. Authorities arrived to the 19600 block of Andover – near John R and E. State Fair – fo find six people had been shot.
A seventh victim later showed up at a hospital.
A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. As of Monday afternoon, one victim in the Andover shooting was in critical condition, while the others were expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
Officials say the shooting stemmed from an argument over a game. Local reports say those involved in the incident were playing a dice game.
Police officials say they “believe these shootings to be isolated crimes that do not pose a threat to the public.”
“It is sad to say, but Detroit is not immune to mass shootings,” Detroit Police Chief James White said, per a press release. “We understand these numbers help make national media headlines, but to us, each one represents a person who is someone’s mother or father, a son or daughter, a loved one, or a friend.”
“The two mass shootings were isolated and not random. I have full confidence in the men and women of the Detroit Police Department and their ability to get these violent offenders off our streets,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the surviving victims and their families.”
Authorities are asking anyone who knows something about either shooting to call the Detroit Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
