Macomb County sees big spike in COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools

(WWJ) -- Macomb County schools are seeing a spike in COVID-19 outbreaks, according to the latest data released by state health officials on Monday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported more than 8,400 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus over the past three days statewide, with more than 100 new outbreaks, most of which are in K-12 schools.

Data shows 25 of those new outbreaks were at schools in Macomb County reported on Monday, the most of any county in the state. The ongoing outbreaks involve 484 students and staff members.

Fifteen of the 25 outbreaks in the county were at high schools.

The state had previously been reporting 23 ongoing outbreaks at Macomb County schools between Sept. 20 and Oct. 11, involving just 100 total students and staff.

Unlike other counties in the metro Detroit area, Macomb County does not currently have a school mask requirement.

Data shows there were far fewer newly reported outbreaks on Monday in surrounding counties. There were six new outbreaks in Wayne County (including Detroit City), three in Lapeer County, four in St. Clair County, and no new outbreaks in Oakland County.

No new outbreaks were reported at any of the state's colleges or universities this week.

A full list of school outbreaks can be found on the state’s website.

Last Friday, state health officials released a summary of a study that shows school districts without mask requirements are experiencing higher case rates, while districts with complete or partial mask orders have lower case rates, with slower increases.
