STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- One metro Detroit town has been named the safest big city in Michigan!

Newly-released data from the FBI shows that out of all communities in the state with a population of over 100,000, Sterling Heights recorded the lowest violent crime and property crime rates.

The Macomb County city had a total of 237 violent crimes in 2020, which is 25% lower than Ann Arbor, 66% lower than Clinton Township and 191% lower than Warren.

Property crime rates were also the lowest in the state at 1,205 for the year, which is 4% lower than Clinton Township, 36% lower than Ann Arbor and 69% lower than Warren.

Additionally, a reported 97% of those who responded to a recent resident survey say the feel safe in their Sterling Heights neighborhood, and 86% are satisfied with police protection.

“Preventing crime is all about team work,” said Sterling Heights police chief Dale Dwojakowski. “We wouldn’t have the low crime rates we do without a great collaborative effort between our officers and our resident and businesses. Working together, we ‘re able to keep our community among the safest in the nation.”

The data comes from the FBI’s 2020 annual Crime in the United States report.
