CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A merging lane in a construction zone was the cause of flared tensions between two drivers Wednesday morning, which led to the arrest of one man after he allegedly fired a pepper ball gun on another motorist.
Chesterfield Township police said officers responded to EB I-94 near 21 Mile shortly before 9 a.m. after a male caller in a white sedan said a driver in a yellow Chevy Corvette shot a weapon at his vehicle during an alleged road rage incident.
The caller, a 56-year-old male from Chesterfield Township, said the suspect driver in the corvette took off on EB I-94.
Police said officers were in the immediate area and were able to locate the suspect vehicle on I-94 south of 26 Mile Road.
According to officials, the suspect driver, a 51-year-old male from Madison Heights, told police that he shot his pepper ball gun at the white sedan because he feared for his safety.
The incident appeared to start after both vehicles were forced to merge into once lane due to a construction zone on M-59 and I-94, officers said.
Police arrested the man and impounded the corvette where they found and confiscated the pepper ball gun.
The 51-year-old is currently being held at the Macomb County Jail pending an arraignment which police said may occur as soon as tomorrow.
The suspect driver faces assault and reckless driving charges.
Police said they found minor damage to the white sedan from the weapon, but neither drive was injured in the incident.
