According to the sheriff's office, deputies were asked by a family member to check on a woman in the home. The family member had received a text message from the woman says that she was "in trouble" with someone in the home, and she needed help.

When deputies arrived and entered the house, they were immediately attacked by a man armed with a hatchet, officials said.

The man was prounounced dead a the scene.

The wounded deputy was taken to a hospital in Petoskey for treatment, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Sheriff Dale Clarmont said this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.
