TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ) -- A young man is facing child porn and other criminal charges in Northern Michigan after police say they found nude photos of an underage person on his cell phone.
Tyler James Cook of Cadillac, who is now 21 years old, was arraigned in 86th District Court in Grand Traverse County last week in connection with alleged crimes that took place a few years ago.
According to a press release by the Michigan State Police, the investigation began in August of 2022 when a person came to the police station to report the alleged sexual assault of a child that "occurred three years prior."
According to the reporting person, the incident was discovered when someone read the victim's journal.
When the victim was interviewed at the Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center, police said, Cook was identified as the suspect.
Cook was then question by investigators, his cell phone was seized, and the MSP Computer Crimes Unit found nude photos of the victim on the device, MSP said.
A report was turned over to the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office and Cook was arrested at his home on Thursday, March 16, and was taken to the Grand Traverse County Jail.
The charges are as follows: One count Criminal Sexual Conduct Third Degree (Victim 13 to 15), one count Possession Child Sexually Abusive Material, and one count of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime.
Bond was set at $25,000, 10%, and Cook's next court date was set for March 29.
