HARPER WOODS (WWJ) - A Macomb County woman is in jail after police say she was involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a man changing his flat tire along I-94 in Harper Woods late Tuesday evening.

Michigan State Police said they were called out to a two-vehicle crash reported on the eastbound lanes of the I-94 freeway near 8 Mile/Vernier in Harper Woods just before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13th.

When troopers got to the scene, they discovered one driver had died while the other fled the area.

Based on their preliminary investigation, police said the victim, identified as a 23-year-old man from Roseville, had parked his vehicle on the right shoulder and was changing a flat tire when both he and his vehicle were hit by the suspect vehicle.

The man died from the crash while the suspect driver took off.

A short while later, Harper Woods police contacted MSP with the suspect driver, a 25-year-old female from Clinton Township, in custody. Troopers said police engaged in a brief foot chase with the woman, who allegedly injured an officer.

MSP claims the woman also bit a trooper when they took her into custody.

Troopers said they were readying a search warrant around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday for a blood draw on the suspect at St. John's Hospital. At this time, it remains unclear if MSP suspects alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the crash

In addition to running from the scene, police said they will pursue additional charges for injuring law enforcement.

MSP is continuing to investigate the incident. No other information was made available.
