(WWJ) A 37-year-old man has been ordered held without bond in the Oakland County Jail, accused of attempting to beat a homeless person to death.

Rashaan Denee Redmond, of Pontiac, was arrested Monday, and appeared in court on Tuesday to face a charge of assault with intent to to murder — a felony that carries up to life in prison if convicted.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard credited the quick work of detectives
and members of the Sheriff's Fugitive Apprehension Team (FAT) for taking "an extremely dangerous person" off the street.

“This viciousness of this beating is disturbing on so many levels,” Bouchard said, in a statement.

“This is one of the most savage and senseless attacks I have ever seen. The victim was unconscious, clinging to life and this suspect stands over him one last time and slaps his lifeless body, spits on him and then simply drives away. It’s impossible to comprehend how anyone could do this to another person.”

The alleged attack happened at around 5 a.m. Saturday, at the Sunoco Gas Station at 45054 Woodward Ave, near South Blvd., in Pontiac.

Deputies arrived and to find the victim unconscious, foaming at the mouth and having difficulty breathing, according to the sheriff's office.

The review of surveillance video revealed that the victim was sitting in front of the station when a man – later identified as Redmond, officials said – pulled up in a gold/beige GMC Suburban with no license plate.

According to the sheriff's report: "Redmond can be seen talking to the victim and ultimately offered him $1 to put air in his tires. As the victim is hunched over by the right front tire, Redmond became agitated and sucker punched the victim in the head, knocking him to the ground.

"For the next minute or so, Redmond kicked and stomped the victim in the head and face a dozen times before walking away. He then can be seen in the video returning, slapping the unconscious man before spitting on him and tossing his belongings in the air."

Officials said Redmond then fled the scene, leaving the victim lying limp on the ground.

Detectives do not believe that Redmond or the 36-year-old victim knew each other.

The man, whose name has not been released, listed his residence as both Milford Township and Pontiac, the sheriff's office said. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in critical condition with major brain trauma at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital.

Redmond was remanded into custody following his arraignment in 50th District Court.

He has probable cause conference set for Sept. 2, followed by a pretrial conference for Sept. 9.
