ALLEN PARK (WWJ) -- An animal cruelty charge has been filed against a 22-year old Dearborn man accused of killing a parakeet at an Allen Park pet store.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's office says 22-year old Ali Chehade intentionally smashed a box that had the bird in it last week at the Critter Pet Shop on Ecorse Road.
Owner Michael Simms says Chehade asked for a refund for the $30 dollar blue parakeet, but got mad when they instead offered him store credit.
He then threw the bird's carrier box on the ground and proceeded to kick and hit it, killing the bird. The situation was caught on camera.
“I calmed him down and continued to tell him ‘I’ll give you store credit and you can get anything in the store and I’ll make sure the bird is okay,'" Simms told WDIV-Channel 4. "With how irate he was, I didn’t know how he was going to care for it. I was more worried about the animal than anything.”
Chehade is expected to appear before a judge later this morning
