DETROIT (WWJ) -- A pedestrian bridge in Downtown Detroit is closed down after a man claimed he fell through the concrete while on his way to a Tigers game.
According to The Detroit News, Ely Hydes was walking to Comerica Park on Sunday and crossed the Spruce Street pedestrian bridge in Corktown before he fell nearly 15 feet -- landing near oncoming traffic on the Lodge Freeway.
MDOT issued a response stating they were not initially aware of a hole in the bridge until someone at The Detroit News reached out to them.
Michigan Department of Transportation has since boarded over the hole and says crews will complete a detailed inspection of the bridge that sits over the freeway at the I-75 downtown interchange.
Diane Cross with MDOT says the inspection will determine whether they need to replace the surface or the entire bridge.
According to Cross, the agency had already planned to inspect the bridge by the end of the month, due to its condition and age; the bridge is nearly 70 years old.
The 36-year-old attorney told The Detroit News that he's considering filing a lawsuit against the state.
