Man crushed to death by 12 ton mold in accident at Macomb County plant

(WWJ) A 42-year-old man was killed on Tuesday when a mold weighing 12 and-a-half tons fell on top of him at a plant in Bruce Township.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office says deputies and a fire department rescue crew responded at around 10 a.m. to auto parts supplier Romeo Rim Inc. on Van Dyke, but the victim was already dead.

"He had been trapped under a 25,000-pound manufacturing mold that had fallen from the wall on top of him," Sgt. Renee Yax told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeill.

The death of the man -- since identified by as David Spano, an employee at Romeo Rim -- appears to have been a "very tragic accident," Yax said.

No one else was hurt.

The investigation into how it happened is ongoing, and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has been contacted.

Romeo Rim makes polyurethane molds and serves transportation, heavy truck, agriculture and construction companies.
