BINGHAM TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A 69-year-old man has died in a wood cutting accident in Michigan's Thumb region.

Huron County police say Ubly resident Ronald Melnik went into the woods alone on Sunday to cut wood near Atwater and Bad Axe Road in Bingham Township.

Using a tractor, he seemingly attempted to pull a cut piece of wood off a dead ash tree. While doing so, the line snagged another dead tree that was still standing, which then fell, killing Melnik.

His body wasn’t discovered until the following day, when friends went out to look for him because he failed to show up to work.

The situation is currently being investigated by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.
