DETROIT (WWJ) – Charges are expected to be filed soon against a driver who Detroit police say was high when he hit Eastern Market CEO Dan Carmody and his wife Vivian Friday night.

In a Monday update Detroit Police Chief James White told reporters a 29-year-old suspect from Romulus was intoxicated with alcohol and narcotics. He may have overdosed before the crash, which happened in the area of St. Aubin and Lafayette while the couple were on their way to dinner.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, crashed into a tree after hitting the couple. He was given a dose of Narcan to keep him alive. He is expected to survive, according to police.

Vivian Carmody died of her injuries, while her husband was last reported in stable condition after undergoing surgery over the weekend.

“The Eastern Market family is deeply sorry for the Carmody family and will give our full support to Dan and his family through this incredibly sad and difficult time,” President Katy Trudeau said in a statement over the weekend.
