ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) -- A Rochester Hills man is behind bars in the Oakland County Jail after authorities alleged he robbed a local gas station at knifepoint.
Jason Mark Thompson, 45, has been charged with armed robbery in connection with the crime on Saturday, April 23, at the Speedway gas station on Crooks Rd. at Star-Batt Dr.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Thompson walked into the business at around 1:45 a.m. armed with a knife. It's alleged he ordered the clerk to open the cash register and then get down on his hands and knees.
The robber then ran away with the money, investigators said.
After detectives identified the suspect on suvelience video, Thompson was arrested on Monday in the lobby of a Red Roof Inn a few blocks away.
The sheriff's office later found evidence of the crime along Thompson’s flight route, including the knife used in the robbery.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said "good old-fashioned police work was able to take this violent offender off the street.
“I compliment the Rochester Hills substation for its great work and look forward to this individual being held accountable," Bouchard said.
Thompson was arraigned in 52-3 District Court on Thursday. Bond was set at $500,000, with the condition that he wear a GPS tether if he is released.
Officials said Thompson has an extensive criminal history, which includes convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, fleeing and eluding and retail fraud.
