DETROIT (WWJ) - Troopers are trying to figure out who and why someone allegedly open fired on I-94 in Detroit late Friday night, injuring one man -- but the investigation is hitting some hurdles, authorities said.
Michigan State Police's 1st Lt. Mike Shaw said investigators are currently trying to piece together what happened after Detroit Receiving Hospital reported to police that a 24-year-old man from Sterling Heights had walked through their ER doors with a gunshot wound around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2.
Troopers met the victim at the hospital where the man told them that he was shot while driving on the freeway.
The 24-year-old alleges that he was traveling on eastbound I-94, between I-75 south and Woodward Road in Detroit, when he heard ten gunshots. The man was struck in the leg and drove himself to the hospital.
According to police, the man said he believed the suspect vehicle involved was a Chrysler 200, but he doesn't know why or who shot him.
In fact, troopers continued, the victim doesn't want to help with the investigation at all.
"Currently, we are trying to establish what occurred and where it happened," Shaw said. "Naturally it makes it a little harder to make progress in an investigation when those involved are not cooperative.”
Troopers were forced to shut down the freeway to search for evidence. It is unclear if any casings were discovered.
No othering information was released. The investigation remains ongoing.
