DETROIT (WWJ) -- MDOT workers made a shocking discovery, during what was thought to initially be a routine check of an abandoned car.

Michigan State Police are investigating after a person was found dead in the abandoned vehicle along I-96 in Detroit.

According to the MSP Second District, a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) courtesy patrol van pulled up behind a vehicle that was stopped along eastbound I-96 at Joy Road, at around 12:30 p.m. Monday.

An MDOT employee found the body in the vehicle and called police, officials said.

The person found dead has not been identified.

While no further details were given, MSP officials said in a tweet the on-scene investigation has been completed and the case pends autopsy results.

"Remember, there's hope and help available. If you or someone you know is struggling, call the 988 suicide prevention line for support. No further information at this time," the tweet said.

Eastbound I-96 was closed at Livernois for several hours as police investigated.
