(WWJ) – Meijer stores across Michigan will be offering free N95 face masks to customers who need them, as part of a free mask program with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The grocery chain has received an estimated 3 million masks from the federal government to hand out to customers. Health officials are implementing the new mask program to try and slow the spread of the COVID-19 omicron variant.

Health officials have said the N95 masks provide better protection from the virus than cloth masks and federal agencies are recommending N-95 or KN95 masks due to the more contagious omicron variant.
The masks will be available at store entrances, placed by greeters wearing gloves in piles of three for customers to take.
Meijer, which previously partnered with the federal government to provide COVID-19 vaccinations, says it has provided nearly 3 million doses of the vaccine in about a year. The retailer is encouraging those who still need a booster shot to get one at a Meijer store.
State health officials on Monday reported nearly 40,000 new cases of the virus over the last three days, with 36 new deaths.
