DETROIT (WWJ) – As the country protests the killing of Tyre Nichols at the hands of a specialized unit within the Memphis Police Department, people in Michigan might see similarities to Detroit back in the 1970s.

Memphis police have disbanded the SCORPION Unit (Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods), the task force at the center of Nichols’ death. Some have drawn parallels to the Detroit Police Department’s short-lived, yet deadly STRESS Unit (Stop The Robberies, Enjoy Safe Streets) in the early ‘70s.

On a new Daily J, WWJ’s Zach Clark highlights the violence between the STRESS Unit and Detroiters and takes a look at what lessons could be learned as the discussion surrounding police reform continues.

The STRESS Unit is the subject of a documentary called "Detroit Under STRESS." Director David Van Wie, the son of a STRESS officer, explains what it was like growing up not knowing exactly what his father did and shares the details of what he's learned about the controversial unit in the years since.
