Metro Detroit food delivery drivers are feeling the squeeze as gas prices climb

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WWJ) – With gas prices rising to above $4 a gallon in Metro Detroit, everyone is feeling a little bit of a pinch these days – especially food delivery drivers.

While many Metro Detroiters are trying to save on gas by using delivery services like DoorDash, GrubHub or UberEats, those drivers are feeling the impact of those higher gas prices -- especially on longer trips.

Drivers are becoming more selective with the orders they’re choosing to accept, and some say it’s not even worth it to drive longer distances for lower-paying orders and will often pass them up.

Some orders even fall through the cracks and don’t get delivered at all.

“Orders that I would accept earlier when gas prices were $2 a gallon are not beneficial for me to accept now that they’re over $4 a gallon,” DoorDash driver Dan Minder told WWJ’s Ryan Marshall at the Panera Bread in Southfield.

He says some drivers are netting negative money on some deliveries.

Byron Green, also with DoorDash, thinks drivers need to be better incentivized, especially in the midst of this gas price spike.

“It’s definitely harder than when I first started,” he said.

While it varies on the different types of orders he gets, he says he has to take the time to “decipher” which ones he’ll take.
