(WWJ/AAA) -- Despite some relief at the pump, gas prices in metro Detroit are still nearly a dollar higher than last year.
AAA says the current average in the metro area is $3.20 per gallon -- about 2 cents more than last week and 96 cents more than this same time last year.
Statewide, prices are down about 2 cents to $3.11 per gallon.
“With supply and gas demand in sync last week, drivers saw minimal fluctuations in prices,” said Adrienne Woodland, AAA spokesperson. “However, increasing crude prices, while gas demand remains high, are likely to push pump prices higher ahead of the Independence Day holiday weekend.”
For the Fourth of July holiday, AAA expects 43 million Americans will drive to their destinations. That is the highest on record for the holiday, and 5% more than the previous record set in 2019.
Travel figures in Michigan are also rebounding from last year. About 1.4 million residents throughout the state are expected to take a road trip during the holiday weekend. That’s also the most on record, and 20% more than the 2020 holiday period.
