(WWJ) -- A journalist from metro-Detroit working in Myanmar has been detained and is now imprisoned in the south-Asian country.

Danny Fenster, a Huntington Woods native, has been working in Myanmar for two years, currently serving as managing editor for Frontier Myanmar, a news magazine that publishes in both English and Burmese.

The magazine posted on Facebook Monday, saying Fenster had been detained at Yangon International Airport as he was boarding a flight to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

He was taken to Insein Prison in Yangon, according to Frontier.

Fenster, who holds a Masters degree from Wayne State University, was reportedly on his way back to the U.S. to visit family, according to a story from the Detroit News.

Fenster’s brother, Bryan Fenster, says Danny is just one of many journalists who have been detained in recent months following a military coup.

"The military is targeting journalists and going as far as to arrest them on-site in their homes and unfortunately, fatally taking lives because of this,” Bryan Fenster told WWJ’s Charlie Langton.

He says they have no idea why Fenster was taken.

“We have no idea. It’s very confusing, it’s very frustrating,” he said. “He’s a journalist in a country where the government wants to control the narrative, which is a shame. It’s very frustrating.”

Myanmar’s Assistance Association for Political Prisoners says more than 4,300 people have been arrested or detained since the coup, and more than 300 have been killed.
