DETROIT (WWJ) – Metro Detroiters rallied behind Ukraine in downtown Detroit on Sunday as Russian forces continue to attack the country.

Supporters gathered at Hart Plaza Sunday afternoon for a “flashmob” event hosted by the Ukrainian-American Crisis Response Committee of Michigan.

Posts on social media showed a convoy of trucks headed to the rally, sporting Ukrainian and American flags.

The trucks were later seen honking their horns in the plaza, where hundreds of people gathered, waving and wearing Ukrainian flags.

Mykola Murskyj, chair of the Ukrainian-American Crisis Response Committee of Michigan, told WWJ earlier this week he was angry and frustrated by the Russian invasion of his homeland.

“I’m sad and I’m horrified,” he said.

Murskyj, who has family in Ukraine, told WWJ's Armetta Landrum that Russian leaders have chosen war over diplomacy.

"There was no need for this to happen; there's absolutely no need for this to happen. This is completely senseless violence. It's not going to lead to anything productive, and it's just gonna cost people's lives," Murskyj said.

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his country's deterrence forces, including their nuclear arsenal, to be on high alert as the nation continues to fight with Ukraine's forces.
