CLARKSTON, Mich. (WWJ) – While some aren’t thrilled about the latest round of snow to hit metro Detroit – which left a mess on area freeways on Monday – it’s good news for the folks at the Pine Knob Ski resort in Clarkston.

Fresh powder means skiers are getting ready to take advantage of the weather at Pine Knob.

Shaun Kennedy, general manager at the resort, tells WWJ it’ll bring people to their slopes.

“Basically, it just drives people out to the ski area, because if they see it in their backyard the mentality is, it kinda gets them excited about doing winter sports, which is good for business,” Kennedy said.

Despite below-average snowfall levels in metro Detroit thus far this season, Kennedy says attendance at Pine Knob has been on par with last year.

He says the resort has 100% snowmaking capabilities and they already had a good amount of coverage prior to Monday’s storm, but “it never hurts to have a little of mother nature’s good stuff, too.”

As for future skiing at Pine Knob this winter, Kennedy hopes that Michigan weather will continue to cooperate.

“It’s always hard to say. As it looks right now, we’re ahead of what an average would be, but as Michigan goes, it can turn on a dime and it’ll be 70 next week, then who knows, right?”

For those who are ready to ditch the snow, don’t expect temperatures in the 70s any time soon. While another round of heavy snow isn’t expected until next week, temperatures are expected to stay below freezing.

Pine Knob is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Daily and season passes are available for purchase on the Pine Knob website.
