(WWJ) -- There are many places in the United States that are known for their snowy, cold conditions.
But as it turns out, America’s snowiest city is actually right here in the Mitten!
That's according to a report from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which says Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has received more inches of snow annually for the last 30 years than any other place in the country (with a population of 10,000 people or more.)
“One of the oldest French settlements in North America, Sault Ste. Marie is located near the bank of a river which connects Lake Huron and Lake Superior,” the publication writes. “With lake-effect snow, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the snowiest places in the United States.”
The city, which is famously home to the Soo Locks, has averaged about 117 inches of snowfall annually since 1992.
Meanwhile, the Northern Michigan city of Muskegon also made the top ten, coming in at No. 7 with 79.3 inches annually thanks to the heavy lake-effect snow it receives due to its position between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake.
Other Michigan cities that tend to receive substantial snowfall each year include Grand Rapids (74.6 inches), Flint (49.9 inches) and Detroit (43 inches).
In order to determine the snowiest cities, the Old Farmer’s Almanac looked at annual snowfall data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as reported by individual weather stations from across the country.
Additionally, the list only includes cities with a population of 10,000 or more residents.
“Otherwise,” the Almanac notes, “this list would be dominated by Alaskan towns.”
By those standards, here are the Top 10 Snowiest Cities in the U.S.:
1. Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
2. Syracuse, New York
3. Juneau, Alaska
4. Duluth, Minnesota
5. Erie, Pennsylvania
6. Burlington, Vermont
7. Muskegon, Michigan
8. Casper, Wyoming
9. Portland, Maine
10. Worcester, Massachusetts
