(WWJ) A 25-year-old father jailed for the alleged abuse of his two children in northern Michigan claims that a television fell on the kids.
According to Michigan State Police, the grandmother and mother of the children found bruises on both of the kids after they spent the day with their biological dad, Brenden William-Robert Smith of Alpena, on July 21.
When the women confronted Smith, they reported he became angry and insisted that a TV had toppled on the children, causing their injuries.
The kids were treated at a local hospital.
After Smith fled the home, on US-23 North Highway in Alpena Township, the grandmother called 911, State Police began investigating.
Days later, MSP found and interviewed Smith, who told troopers the same story about the TV, again denying any role in injuring the children.
A report was submitted to the Alpena County Prosecutor's Office, and Smith was arrested on August 2.
He was arraigned in 88th District Court in Alpena on Thursday on two counts First Degree Child Abuse, and one count First Degree Child Abuse Committed in the Presence of another Child.
Bond was set at $100,000 cash surety and his next court appearance was scheduled for Aug. 18.
