Michigan DNR offering nearly 100 properties in 14 online auctions

(WWJ) -- If you’ve ever wanted to buy some land in Michigan, now may be your chance.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources on Thursday announced the next round of surplus land auctions, with land ranging from lake frontage to trail access, and small lots to extend a neighborhood lot.

The DNR says after careful consideration of properties it manages on behalf of Michigan residents, it has selected 97 plots that “are much better suited for private ownership,” and the department is preparing to sell them via 14 online auctions in August and early September.

Land is available mainly in the central and northern parts of the Lower Peninsula, as well as the Upper Peninsula in the following counties: Alcona, Allegan, Benzie, Berrien, Chippewa, Clare, Genesee, Huron, Kalkaska, Kent, Lake, Mackinac, Mason, Mecosta, Menominee, Midland, Newaygo, Roscommon and Saginaw.

The DNR says the largest parcels are in Clare, Lake and Menominee Counties.

The 14 online auctions will be held county-by-county on the following dates:

-- Aug. 2: Benzie County

-- Aug. 3: Chippewa County and Mackinac County

-- Aug. 4: Menominee County

-- Aug. 6: Kalkaska County and Roscommon County

-- Aug. 12: Alcona County

-- Aug. 16: Mason County

-- Aug. 17: Clare County, Lake County and Newaygo County

-- Aug. 24: Berrien County

-- Aug. 25: Mecosta Couny

-- Aug. 26: Allegan County and Kent County

-- Aug. 27: Midland County

-- Aug. 31: Huron County

-- Sept. 2: Saginaw County

-- Sept. 3: Genesee County

Interested bidders will be able to register in advance of the auctions and more information is available online. Those wanting to bid on a property must register before that parcel’s auction date. The DNR says absentee bids can be made online up to 30 days before the auction.

The “interactive” bidding portion of each auction will open at 10 a.m. on the date of each auction, and at that time bidders will be able to see current high bids for each property. Bidders can continue to place bids on properties until 7 p.m. when bidding closes and the winner is determined.
