(WWJ) – Deer hunting season in Michigan is in its final weeks, and for the first time, the Department of Natural Resources is able to report accurate harvest numbers in near real time.
This is the first year the DNR has required hunters to report their deer harvest within 72 hours of the kill, via call or mobile app. In previous years reporting was only optional and the DNR wasn’t able to accurately track the deer harvest.
But now the DNR offers a nearly live look at the latest numbers on its website.
As of Thursday night, Michigan hunters had harvested more than 266,000 deer dating back to early antlerless archery season.
According to the DNR website, 154,701 of those deer came during regular firearm season, between Nov. 15 and Nov. 30.
Sanilac County, located in the Thumb, saw the most harvests with 3,967, while Montcalm, Newaygo, Menominee, Tuscola, Jackson and Lapeer Counties all also topped 3,000.
Locally, St. Clair County had 2,690 harvests, Washtenaw had 2,010, Livingston 1,916, Genesee 1,673, Oakland 1,087, Macomb 869 and Monroe 725.
Muzzleloader season runs through Sunday, while archery season runs through the end of the year.
