GAYLORD (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police took the opportunity Sunday night to share something different from the usual crime reports -- posting photos of the Northern Lights over Northern Michigan.

Officers from MSP's Gaylord Post captured the images around midnight on Monday and Tweeted them out for all to see.

The green glow against the black sky and snow-covered ground is both beautiful and surreal.

Complimenting the radiant lights was the practical -- but not quite as radiant -- flash of the MSP patrol lights.

"Troopers working the midnight shift had a beautiful view of the Northern Lights last night," the MSP said in its post.

According to the Northern Lights Center, this phenomenon — also known as Aurora borealis — is the result of collisions between gaseous, electrically charged particles in the Earth’s atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere. Variations in color are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding.
