Michigan surpasses 1 million COVID-19 cases since start of pandemic

(WWJ) -- Michigan hit another milestone Wednesday, but not necessarily a good one, when it comes to COVID-19.

State health officials reported 6,079 new cases of the virus over the last two days, pushing Michigan’s total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began past the 1,000,000 mark.

The confirmed case count rose to 1,001,989, meaning about 1 in 10 Michiganders has contracted the coronavirus since the first case was reported last March.

Officials also reported 81 new deaths Wednesday, 52 of which were found during a routine vital records check. Michigan’s COVID-19 death toll surpassed 20,000 this summer, and now sits at 20,781, health officials said.

The latest numbers come as the state continues to grapple with the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus, which has become the dominant strain across the country. The state’s number of new daily cases has been holding steady over the past few weeks.

State health officials are continuing Michiganders to get the COVID-19 vaccine. More information on the pandemic can be found at michigan.gov/coronavirus
