(WWJ) -- Michigan's average gas prices are inching closer to $5 per gallon.

The state's fuel prices are up 14 cents from a week ago, according to AAA.

Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.70 per gallon for regular unleaded, which is a new record high. This price is a whopping 66 cents more than this time last month and $1.66 more than this time last year.

AAA reports that a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline is costing motorists an average of $70, which is an increase of about $19 from when prices were their highest last November.

"A spike in demand for the busy Memorial Day weekend helped push Michigan gas prices to a new record high," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "A post holiday decline in demand could have motorists seeing some stability at the pump, but if crude oil prices continue to trade above $105 per barrel, then gas prices will likely remain elevated."

As for Metro Detroit, the average daily gas price increased steadily, setting a new record high, as well. The area's current average is $4.79 per gallon, which is about 20 cents more than last week's average and $1.71 more than this same time last year.

Most expensive gas price averages:
• Metro Detroit -- $4.79
• Marquette -- $4.74
• Ann Arbor -- $4.73

Least expensive gas price averages:
• Grand Rapids -- $4.63
• Flint -- $4.66
• Jackson -- $4.67
