DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police have released new details about the 4-year-old boy who was shot -- now it's unclear if the incident even occurred in Detroit as the mother suggested.
At around 5 a.m. Wednesday, the Detroit Police Department received a call from a local hospital about a child suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Detroit Police Chief James E. White said the young boy was struck by birdshot.
White also added that there was "no way" the child shot himself.
The boy's mother told police that he was struck in a drive-by shooting at a bus stop on Joy and Evergreen roads at around 6 p.m. Tuesday -- but Commander Arnold Williams said her story doesn't quite match the facts.
"We were unable to find a scene at the location and we were unable to get any collaboration from any witnesses," Arnold told WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton.
Police now say that It’s unclear if the child was even shot in the city of Detroit.
The area of the alleged incident is equipped with Project Green Light surveillance that the Criminal Intelligence Unit has been reviewing -- but there hasn't been any type of a shooting caught on the cameras.
Langton asked people in the area about the incident, but nobody heard shots. Police also haven't found any gun casings.
"We want to be sensitive to the mom...she's likely traumatized by what happened to her child but there are some challenges getting some information from the witnesses," said White.
The victim’s family currently resides in Taylor and following the shooting, police said the child was transported to multiple locations.
DPD investigators are now in the process of looking for a crime scene in Taylor.
The kid is at the hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
There is no word on suspects.
"Somebody who shot a baby should not be roaming the streets," said White.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone who has any information on this incident is urged to call the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-5200.
