BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- Police in Bloomfield Township are searching for the people responsible for a rash of catalytic converter thefts in recent weeks.

Police say a catalytic converter was stolen from a work vehicle at Sun Heating and Cooling, located on Franklin near Telegraph. While that theft was reported on April 9, the company says it happened sometime in the last two weeks.

That reported theft comes as Page Honda -- located at 1819 S. Telegraph Road -- says it was hit for a pair of catalytic converters for the second time in the last few weeks. An employee at the dealership says two cars on the rear and side lots had the catalytic converters stolen on either April 7 or April 8.

Three catalytic converters were stolen from that same dealership’s rear lot some time around March 21 or 22.

Catalytic converters -- which are exhaust emission control devices that reduce toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants -- are popular targets for thieves because they contain precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium.

The devices can net upwards of $1,000 for their metals, but thefts often cause more damage to the vehicles.

Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to call the Bloomfield Township Police Department at 248-433-7755.
