(WWJ) Heavy rains and gusty winds knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses in and around metro Detroit as the latest round of storms struck on Friday.

By mid-afternoon, DTE Energy said more than 12,000 homes and businesses were affected by outages. Although, as of 9 p.m., all but about 2,500 have the lights back on.

The remaining outages are scattered throughout the listening area with a large pocket (up to 500) in Farmington Hills in the area of bound by Orchard Lake, Farmington Rd, 13 and 14 Mile. The power is expected to be restored by 9:30 p.m.

There's also a small outage in Novi, at 9 Mile and Meadowbrook Rd. The lights are expected to come back on for those home and businesses around midnight.

DTE said about 135 crews are currently in the field.

The largest outage, involving nearly 4,000 customers, was in the area of M-59, Romeo Plank and Garfield Rd. in Macomb County.

In Oakland County, more than 2,000 customers were without power in the Southfield and Beverly Hills areas.

DTE said power was restored by late afternoon.

WWJ’s AccuWeather Meteorologist Matt Benz says metro Detroit would see showers and thunderstorms throughout the evening Friday. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, he said. However, the biggest problem was expected to be flooding; particularly in Wayne County where a Flood Warning expired around 5 p.m.
