INDIAN RIVER, Mich. (WWJ) – Three men have been charged after Michigan State Police caught them speeding on I-75 in Northern Michigan while the driver was in possession of drugs and driving on a suspended license.
Shawn Wilson of Newport, 32, John Meade of Sault Ste. Marie, 28, and Bradley Phillips of Detroit, 28, were all arrested after a trooper clocked their car going 104 mph in a 75 mph zone.
MSP officials say it all unfolded around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1 near M-68 in Indian River – about 30 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.
As the vehicle began to pull over for the traffic stop, the driver – identified as Wilson – was seen climbing into the rear seat and Meade moved from the front passenger seat to the driver’s seat.
Meade appeared to be under the influence and was arrested after failing sobriety tests, MSP officials said.
Wilson, the original driver, did not have a valid driver’s license and during a search of the vehicle the trooper located multiple syringes and empty pill bottles.
All three men were placed under arrest and taken to the Cheboygan County Jail. During the booking process, Wilson was found to have baggies of suspected fentanyl hidden inside his sock.
All three men were arraigned in the 89th District Court in Cheboygan County.
Wilson was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance, one count of bringing contraband into prison, one count of reckless driving and one count of driving with a suspended license. He was given a $250,000 cash bond.
Meade was charged with one count of operating while under the influence. His bond was set at $10,000. Phillips was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $10,000.
