LIVONIA (WWJ) - State police are coming into the new school year with a cautious approach as they gear up for active shooter drills in Metro Detroit this week.

Troopers for the 2nd District will gather at the Livonia Facility on Deering Street, north of Six Mile Road and west of Inkster for "refresher training" on responding to shooting threats at schools.

"The best part about the Livonia Facility is it is a repurposed school," troopers said in a post to social media on Wednesday. "This makes the active shooter training very realistic and also eliminates the need to use an actual school as they are also getting ready to start the school year."

MSP said they will be communicating from the facility over the next couple of days as they conduct their drills.

Troopers shared a video of a live drill conducted on Wednesday. The sound effects play, but there are no children in these scenarios, MSP said.

"Video of the training troopers are going through to make sure they are prepared for the speed and violence that takes place with an active shooter scene," police said of the exercise.

Tropes with the 2nd district cover Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties.

Oakland County saw a deadly school shooting that captured national headlines last November at Oxford High School.

Alleged shooter Ethan Crumbley, 15, is accused of open firing and killing four students; six students and a teacher were also wounded in the incident that has come under intense scrutiny.

It is the subject of numerous lawsuits against school officials as families of victims and survivors say they didn't do enough to stop the tragic events from happening.
