DETROIT (WWJ) - State police are searching for a suspect who allegedly fired over half a dozen shots at another driver on the Southfield Freeway in Detroit late Thursday evening.
According to Michigan State Police, a motorist called 911 just before 10:30 p.m. and reported their 2012 BMW had been hit by gunfire while they were driving in the northbound lanes of M-39 near I-96 in Detroit.
When troopers arrived on scene, the victim told them the suspect had been driving a maroon or red SUV when they pulled up alongside them and began firing shots.
Afterward, the suspect vehicle took off north on the Southfield Freeway. The victim was unhurt in the incident, troopers added.
"A check with DPD Crime Intel confirmed via ShotSpotter that 8 shots were fired between Schoolcraft and I-96 on NB M-39 Fwy.," MSP said in an update to the case on Friday morning.
A section of freeway was shutdown by authorities as they conducted their investigation. Troopers said five pistol casings were found.
"The motive for this shooting has not been determined.” MSP F/Lt Mike Shaw said. “We will be using some of the technology in that area and work with the victim in identifying the suspect and getting them into custody.”
At this time, state police are asking for help from the public as they continue their investigation. Anyone with any information about this incident has been asked to call 855.MICH.TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800.SPEAK UP.
