MSP investigating after suspect fatally shot by police in Lansing

LANSING (WWJ) – A suspect is dead after being shot by police officers in Lansing on Thursday.

Lansing police responded to a shooting on Irene Court, south of the downtown area, around 5 p.m., the department said on Twitter

When officers showed up, they heard more shots and called for backup.

A short time later LPD officers and Michigan State Police troopers encountered the suspect, who was armed with a handgun.

“At that point an officer involved shooting occurred,” police officials said on Twitter.

The suspect, whose name and age were not released, was fatally shot.

Officers secured the suspect and rendered first aid. The Lansing Fire Department responded and provided medical treatment, but the suspect was pronounced deceased.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Authorities have not released many other details, including how many shots were fired by police or what led to the initial reported shooting. It was not clear whether the suspect fired any shots at police.

WILX reported there were multiple police cruisers from several departments on-scene, including Lansing Police, Michigan State Police, Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, MSU Police and Public Safety and others.

The investigation has been turned over to the Michigan State Police. Authorities expect to release more details when they become available.
