DETROIT (WWJ) -- A suspect is in police custody after a shooting at a nightclub in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood around 2:15 a.m. Monday.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisting Wayne State University Police on a traffic crash near Cass and Baltimore Avenues when they heard gunfire ringing out nearby.

Police discovered the gunfire was coming from near a nightclub at Woodward and Milwaukee. When troopers arrived, they saw several patrons running from the parking lot and people screaming.

As troopers got out of their patrol car, multiple people in the parking lot began pointing at a white Chevrolet Impala, which began fleeing the scene, saying the driver was the shooter.

Troopers attempted to stop the driver before he left the parking lot, but he fled the scene. While pursuing the vehicle on Grand Boulevard near Trombly Street, troopers were able to successfully conduct a PIT maneuver (pursuit intervention technique) and took the suspect into custody.

Police searched the vehicle for a firearm, but could not find it. They retraced the path of the pursuit, but there was no sign of a gun.

Troopers headed back to the nightclub, finding most of the patrons had left the club. Police did not find anyone who had been hurt in the shooting.

Several shell casings were recovered from the parking lot, but it was not clear what led up to the gunfire.

The suspect was lodged at the Detroit Detention Center, pending prosecutor review.
