IDA TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – One person is dead after the driver of a U-Haul truck apparently fell asleep and caused a crash in Monroe County Tuesday morning.

Michigan State Police say it all unfolded around 7 a.m. when the northbound truck, driven by a 30-year-old woman from Monroe, drifted into the southbound lanes of Lewis Avenue near West Rauch Road in Ida Township.

Authorities say the truck struck a black Chevy pickup, before crashing head-on into a green Jeep Patriot.

The Jeep overturned and a 60-year-old man from Ida Township was pronounced dead at the scene, MSP said.

The woman driving the U-Haul, a 36-year-old man and a juvenile passenger were all uninjured in the crash, MSP said. Police did not disclose the age of the younger passenger.

A 46-year-old from Petersburg, Mich., who was behind the wheel of the Chevy, was also unharmed in the crash.

Police say it is still unclear whether excessive speed, alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.

MSP officials are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to contact Trooper Thoma of the MSP Monroe Post at 734-242-3500.
