DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two people were arrested on Detroit's west side Wednesday night, after Michigan State Police troopers witnessed a shooting.
MSP said Metro South troopers on patrol in the city, as part of the Detroit Secure Cities Partnership, were on a traffic stop, at Davison Rd. and Petoskey Ave. at around 8:30 p.m., when they heard gunfire close by.
The troopers turned to see two men — one of them allegedly holding and pointing a rifle — turn and run.
The troopers then saw the same men speed by in white Ford Escape.
When the troopers followed and tried to pull the suspects over, the driver refused, police said, so the troopers used the Precision Immobilization Technique, known as a "PIT maneuver" to successfully stop the suspect vehicle.
Both men then ran from the SUV but were quickly caught and arrested without incident, MSP said.
The driver, a 23-year-old Detroit man, and his 19-year-old passenger, who was identified as the alleged shooter, were both booked at the Detroit Detention Center. A rifle was recovered from the suspect vehicle.
Police said a 27-year-old shooting victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
MSP did not release any information about what may have led up to the shooting, but did say that investigators learned that Detroit Police has been looking for a white Ford Escape in connection with another shooting earlier in the day.
The investigation is ongoing.
“Great job by both of these troopers to take these two dangerous suspects off our streets," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. “We will continue to work with our policing partners across the state to make sure Michigan is a place where everyone can feel safe and secure.”
The suspects' names were not immediately released, with charges pending.
