(WWJ) – Three people are in custody after Michigan State Police busted up a large drag race near Detroit early Sunday morning, leading to a wild chase along I-94.

MSP officials say it all unfolded around 12:30 a.m. when troopers were called to Woodward Avenue near Davison in Highland Park, where a reported 40 vehicles were drag racing.

Troopers spotted a group of speeding Dodge Chargers headed south on Woodward. When troopers tried to stop one speeding charger, the driver immediately fled, according to MSP.

The suspect driver ran several red lights and shut off the vehicle lights, officials said. Troopers did not immediately pursue the driver, per departmental policy.

MSP helicopter Trooper 2 located the Charger speeding in Detroit and began following it. The chopper followed the Charger as it traveled throughout Detroit and eventually westbound on I-94 towards Washtenaw County.

MSP Metro South coordinated with MSP Brighton troopers, who positioned themselves with stop sticks at the county line, eventually bringing the Charger to a stop on the shoulder of westbound I-94 nearMichigan.

Three people inside the Charger ran from the scene, but troopers and K-9 units were able to track them down and arrest them, with the help of Trooper 2.

Authorities have not released any details about the suspects, but said they were all from Jackson, Mich. They were all lodged at the Detroit Detention Center, pending prosecutor’s review.

“Great team work to get these criminals off the street and help keep Michiganders safe,” MSP officials said on Twitter.

It was not immediately clear whether any other traffic stops or arrests were made stemming from the initial drag racing incident.
