(WWJ) The National Service has confirmed that a weak tornado did touch down in Monroe County Thursday evening.
According to an NWS damage survey completed Friday, the EF-1 tornado -- which formed at 6:09 p.m. on June 14 about half-a-mile north-northwest of Detroit Beach.
With peak winds speeds of 90 mph, the twister traveled a path of 4.7 miles, ending one mile southwest of Estral Beach at 6:18 p.m.
Spotters said the tornado touched down near Dixie Highway and the north part of the Detroit Beach neighborhood.
Damage in this area was mainly large limbs down with winds estimated to 70 mph. The tornado then tracked east-northeast through Woodland Beach where the most damage was from large limbs down and snapped hardwood trees. Estimated winds were to 90 mph with a 400-yard width in this area, NWS said.
The track continued into Baycrest Beach where limbs and a couple trees were down along the Lakeshore, with estimated winds up to 80 mph, before the tornado crossed Pointe Aux Peaux Rd. east-southeast of Dixie Hwy. and exiting over Lake Erie north of Fermi Power Plant.
There were no injuries reported.
Earlier Thursday, AccuWeather meteorologists warned Southeast Michigan residents of severe storms forecasted to strike the area between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The worst of the weather was predicted to hit south of the M-59 corridor, with damaging wind gusts, hail and frequent lightning strikes.
There was a Tornado Warning in effect for the Detroit Beach / Estral Beach at the time the tornado hit.
