7-year-old boy dies after being pulled from pond in Novi

NOVI (WWJ) -- A Novi child who was found in a pond last week has died.

Officials say the family decided to take the 7-year-old boy off life support on Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of death was ruled a drowning, according to investigators.

The incident took place last Thursday at a pond close to the child's home on 9 Mile Road between Beck and Napier.

The boy's father reportedly saw the 7-year old unresponsive in the water, pulled him out, and called 911.

Dispatchers told the father over the phone how to perform CPR, and once emergency crews arrived, they continued the attempts to resuscitate him.

The child was taken to U of M Children's Hospital for treatment, where he had remained in critical condition and on life support over the past week.

Detective Shawn Penzak tells WWJ that the situation was a tragic accident.

“You think about your own family in things like that and just how shaken they must be going through this,” Penzak said.

The boy was also an organ donor, and his family has chosen to give the gift of life following his passing.

Penzak says the Novi Police Department has connections with the child and his family, and his death has left the community devastated.
