NOVI (WWJ) -- Novi High School students have been dismissed from class early after a threat found in a bathroom on Wednesday prompted students and teachers to shelter in place.

In a statement to families, Superintendent Ben Mainka wrote: “…recently, administrators at NHS became aware of concerning language in a bathroom stall. In an abundance of caution, the building immediately went into a Shelter-In-Place.”

He said the classrooms were locked, but teaching continued until officials checked all classrooms and searched students' backpacks.

After every classroom was cleared, students were dismissed around 1:45 p.m.

There's no word on whether authorities found the person who wrote the threat.

Mainka did not elaborate on what was said or written in the bathroom stall or what time the lockdown began at the school of about 2,000 students, located at 10 Mile and Taft.

“We appreciate your partnership in keeping our students’ safety our top priority,” the statement concluded.
