INDEPENDENCE TWP. (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after an elderly man’s body was found in the bathroom of an Independence Township home – and he had apparently been there for a month.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to do a welfare check on a 76-year-old man at a home on Caberfae Trail around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Independence Twp. officials had tried to contact the listed homeowner, but were unsuccessful and when sheriff’s deputies showed up to the home, a man answered the door.

He told authorities the homeowner was sleeping in a bedroom, but deputies insisted they needed to confirm the man’s wellbeing.

After entering the home, they found the man dead in a bathroom. His name has not been released.

The other resident then told police the body had been there for about a month.

Police took the resident, whose name was not released, to the Independence Township Substation for questioning.

Authorities have not said whether that person will be facing any charges.

Detectives and an Investigator from the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the residence to continue the investigation. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the man’s cause of death.
