(WWJ) A Detroit Police officer is hospitalized after he was injured in a crash on the city's east side on Sunday.

According to a preliminary investigation, the officer was off-duty Sunday afternoon when the suspect, a 24-year-old man, ran a red light at E. 7 Mile Rd. and Schoenherr St. The suspect's Dodge Journey hit the victim's personal vehicle, police said; and third vehicle, a Chrysler 300 that was stopped at the light, was also hit.

The injured officer, who was alert and talking at the scene, was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

The suspect and his three passenger — all of them children — were not injured, and no one in the Chrysler was hurt, police said.

The suspect was arrested at the scene. It's alleged that he was speeding, police said, but no charges have yet bene announced, as the investigation continunes.

No names are being released at this time.

Police noted that all of this is preliminary information and is subject to change upon further investigation.
