DETROIT (WWJ) - Fire officials said they are working to determine what caused a commercial building explosion that injured five people on Detroit's west side Monday evening.

Detroit Fire Chief James Harris said a fire broke out around 7:20 p.m. at a building located on Schoolcraft near Mansfield, just west of Greenfield.

"We arrived on scene there was heavy smoke, heavy fumes," Harris said. "The men and woman of the Detroit Fire Department did an awesome job rescuing people out of there and putting that fire out."

Harris said there were five victims that were taken to a local hopsital -- they are said to be in temporary serious condition.

The chief said fire crews noticed a strong odor coming from the building as they worked to put out the flames -- the fire was ultimately declared a Level One Hazmat situation.

Unconfirmed reports said the explosion was the result of a suspected meth lab or a possible marijuana grow operation.

Harris did not confirm these reports to WWJ and said the cause of the fire remains under investigation -- no further details were made available.

Witnesses in the area said they thought the explosion was from the severe weather that ripped through the area Monday evening.

“We thought it was lightning and thunder because trees were down on the other lot,” said Frank Owens. “They messed up a couple of cars. I heard a loud boom. I seen people run out half naked, with their clothes off.”

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ for the latest updates.
