ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- The Detroit Zoo is mourning the loss of its oldest Tiger.
Kisa, the beloved Amur tiger, passed away on Thursday during a veterinary procedure meant to improve her quality of life and manage her arthritis, said the zoo in a Facebook post.
For several years, the almost 19-year-old tiger battled with several age-related illnesses. The zoo had been monitoring and treating her age-related ailments; she was on three different medications.
Her caregivers say she loved taking long walks -- especially if there was snow on the ground. Zoo officials said she was an individual who followed her own set of rules -- and despite being known for her spirited attitude, she was mild-mannered with staff.
Kisa was born in August 2003 at the Detroit Zoo; she was the oldest tiger in the Devereux Tiger Forest. Kisa was considered elderly for an Amur, or Siberian tiger, whose life expectancy is 10 to 15 years in the wild.
