(WWJ) -- An Alabama man is in police custody in Oakland County after allegedly assaulting a Rochester Hills man over the weekend. Authorities are still searching for a second suspect in the case.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says a man had fallen asleep in his car early Friday morning after returning from work. The man was awakened at about 4:30 a.m. by someone tugging on him. The victim said the man tugging on him was armed with two pistol.
The sheriff’s office says deputies received a call regarding a report of shots fired near a condominium complex in the 2600 block of Helmsdale, near Auburn and Rochester Road.
The victim told deputies he had grabbed onto the guns and began fighting with the suspect.
At some point during the fight, three shots were fired, but no one was struck, according to the sheriff’s office.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they saw two men fighting and ordered them to drop any weapons. Two weapons dropped to the ground, authorities said.
Both men had minor injuries from the fight, but neither had been hit by the reported gunfire.
Authorities said, because of the darkness, it was difficult for deputies to determine who was holding the guns, but deputies did hear the victim yelling “who sent you?”
A second armed suspect, who was dressed in dark clothes and a ski mask, ran away from the scene.
The victim later said he was fighting for his life and didn’t want to die there. He said he bit one of his attackers -- who has since been identified as 29-year-old Marquise Ldarius Pope of Birmingham, Ala. -- several times.
Pope was arrested and was unable to give deputies a reasonable explanation for why he was at the scene.
Deputies attempted to locate the second suspect with a K-9 unit, but were unsuccessful.
