WAYNE (WWJ) - Police in Wayne are quelling rumors circulating on social media on Saturday after a false report about a shooting at Ford plant caused some panic Friday night.
"In response to rumors circulating on social media, there is no active shooter at Ford Motor Company, nor is there any threat to the public," the Wayne Police Department said in an update.
According to police, officers responded earlier Friday evening to a report of possible shots fired at the Michigan Assembly Plant off Michigan Ave., but officers found no shooter or threat to the public or employees.
In fact, they found the the report did not even come from anyone at the plant or nearby — or even in the United States.
Police said they traced the report to a story that was being read and shared online.
"The article being shared on social media providing false information originated from outside the United States," the department said. "We have requested the outlet remove the inaccurate information."
Police clarified that no one was injured or killed and cleared the plant of any threat.
